What you get
Launched to wean tribal shifting cultivators (jhumias) away from jhum (slash-and-burn) cultivation, this long-running programme distributes horticultural planting material including pineapple, banana, arecanut, coconut, mango and jackfruit saplings to jhumia families willing to take up settled horticulture on allotted plots. It was first rolled out in South Tripura and Dhalai districts and has since been extended to other jhum-practising belts. Beneficiaries also receive basic training and follow-up technical support from horticulture extension staff to help establish orchards on hill slopes, with the goal of providing a stable, non-shifting source of farm income within a few years of plantation establishment.
