What you get

Tamil Nadu has implemented the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) from Kharif 2016 across all districts except Chennai, providing yield-loss-based insurance coverage for both food crops and horticultural crops against natural calamities such as drought, flood, cyclone, and pest/disease attacks. Average yield benchmarks for notified crops are established through crop-cutting experiments conducted by Assistant Agriculture Officers, against which actual seasonal yield shortfalls trigger claim payouts. Horticulture crop coverage was expanded from Kharif 2019-20 to include Banana, Tapioca, Turmeric, Potato, Onion and Red Chillies plus 8 additional annual crops (Bhendi, Brinjal, Cabbage, Carrot, Garlic, Ginger, Coriander, Tomato), with over Rs 210 crore settled as compensation to more than 1.39 lakh horticulture farmers between 2016-17 and 2019-20 alone.

Eligibility criteria

  • Must be a farmer (owner-cultivator or tenant/sharecropper) growing a notified crop in a notified district/block of Tamil Nadu
  • Premium payment required by the prescribed cut-off date for the season (Kharif/Rabi)
  • Loanee farmers may be enrolled automatically through their bank; non-loanee farmers apply voluntarily

How to apply

  1. 1

Apply through your bank (for loanee farmers, automatic) or via the Uzhavan app/Common Service Centre (for non-loanee farmers)

  2. 2

Pay the nominal farmer-share premium (2% for Kharif food/oilseed crops, 5% for horticulture/commercial crops)

  3. 3

Claims assessed via crop-cutting experiments and yield-loss data; payout credited directly to bank account

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card
  • Land records
  • Bank account details
  • Sowing certificate (for non-loanee farmers)
